Jeff Weir

My first brotograph

I have an older brother and he’s a pretty swell guy. I haven’t seen him in a bit over three years, on account of him living in Seattle and me living in Toronto. In addition to that, he decided a year ago that he was going to go on an adventure for a year and just travel around different parts of the world to experience things and work on some small personal projects.

Just before going to Vancouver last week for some business, I found out that he would be landing in Vancouver on the 25th and going to Nanaimo. My business stuff ended on the 24th so I took some time off and went to the island to see my folks and meet up with my brother. Good times were had by all. My original intent was to get a wide shot of him with all the gear he travelled with, but when our aunt showed up, I saw him smiling in a way I know of as “the real smile”, and quickly grabbed that. I decided it would be the showcase shot for today, but still want to share the picture of him with all his worldly possessions over the past year:

Next time you move and are packing up all that crap, take a long hard look at this.

Two bags and a pair of slippers for the better part of a year. I had more crap with me for a 1 week trip.

It made me recall my year in Australia, and having that simple lifestyle that allowed you to start heading anywhere at any time without worrying about leaving anything behind. Those are the kind of journeys that usually bring back a different person. Changed for the better.

I took this with my 85mm lens, shooting at 1/250 of a second and f1.8 with an ISO of 100.

  1. I love this so much. Thanks, guys, for showing that material possessions aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.
