Yesterday, while at the park, there were a number of birds in the water and on the shore across the pond. It turns out that across the water is a golf course which had a good bit of activity and when the golfers had a bad shot, they would end up having to scare the birds away and into the water to get at their ball. This caused them to take a swim over to the non-golfer, park side and into range of me snapping away pictures.
This bird is called a Double Crested Cormorant and it is one of the uglier birds we have around – right up there with the Turkey Vulture. Jamie brought them to my attention when we ran into him at High Park, as there was one there swimming around. The one thing about these birds though that makes them on the side of beautiful is their bright blue eyes.
Doing some reading, it turns out that Earl Bales park has a pretty regular population of these guys, so I have a feeling more shots of them will appear on here in the future.
I shot this with my Canon 7D and the Sigma 80-400mm lens shooting at 1/400 of a second, F9 and ISO 500. Today was a gorgeous day and we spent most of it outside which resulted in a little sun burn on my head. Oh to being a white guy.
