This morning, Vahida had an idea – steam. She was looking at our humidifier, and saw some of the steam and thought I should give it a try. This took us to the kettle and a lot of testing. I wasn’t sure how to go about a shot like this, but I knew light and speed would be a factor. Unfortunately, with the flashes I have, those two things do not go the best together.
In the world of flashes, there is a thing called High Speed Sync. This means that the flash is able to fire at a higher shutter speed. My flashes do not have this feature, and that means that I can only shoot at a maximum of 1/250 of a second – but I think that was enough to get it working.
The next issue was going to be light and getting enough of it without washing out the background. This proved to be a little more of an issue, but with a lot of test shots, we were able to get there.
In the end, I needed two shots to get one complete photo. One for the steam and another for the kettle to get the exposure on it that I would like.
Canon 7D, 1/250 of a second, F8 and ISO 100. Today was a beautiful day.
