Tonight was another rose day and I wanted to try some reflections using a mirror. I knew this was going to be a little tricky since a mirror wants to reflect literally everything and based on the angle of the camera, I was going to have to do some major background control. What I didn’t think about was white balance at first. Since this was taken at night, I simply set up the shot and took a few testers using our apartment lighting, a long shutter and Vahida as my beautiful assistant. The mirror was doing its mirroring thing and reflecting some of our wall art, so I took a white pillow and held it in the back to cover things up and get a white look.
When the shot was taken, the colour balance was completely off. My red roses looked peach. I played with some camera settings to get a different colour balance, but I finally submitted that I would instead just get some flashes set up and do things properly. Which worked, they lite the shot up nicely and the colour was true. The only issue? I liked the other shot better. Once in Lightroom I compared things and I was torn. I bugged Vahida for her opinion, and it was the same as mine – the shot with the wrong colour looked a lot better. That means in the end, the shot that was a mistake ended up becoming the big winner. The ugly duckling that grows up to be beautiful if you will.
Canon 7D, 38 seconds, F5 and ISO 100. Today was gorgeous, but got chilly in the evening.
